Pregnancy is a really beautiful time for a lot of mothers. Unfortunately, it can also be a really uncomfortable time as well. The good new is, many women are now discovering the benefits of receiving chiropractic care before, during, and after pregnancy!
As mother's know, there is a lot that happens to your body during those 9 (really 10) months. Your body is producing a lot of hormones that you are not used to and one of those hormones is Relaxin. Relaxin is an extremely important hormone for you as it allows your body joints to move more freely to make room for your growing baby and ultimately give birth! However, this also means that your spinal bones are moving in ways they haven't before.
Neurology and Genetics
Normal movement of spinal bones is important to allow you to move fluidly throughout daily living but excessive motion can have damaging affects to your nervous system. Because your nervous system controls and coordinates every other function of your body, its extremely important that we ensure your body functions optimally! This optimal function not only impacts how you feel throughout your pregnancy but could also impact your baby's development. New research is suggesting that extra stress carried throughout pregnancy will affect the genetic expression of your growing baby. This is not meant to make you fearful of daily stresses but to feel empowered in the connection between you and your baby and the positive affect you can have on your baby's future!
Moms and expecting moms know that pregnancy is not always glamorous. There are a lot of symptoms that can accompany it including: morning sickness, mood swings, sciatica, difficulty sleeping, low back pain, acid reflux, cramping, hip pain, carpal tunnel, and even constipation. While chiropractic care may not be able to completely resolve all problems, many moms find that their pregnancy is much more enjoyable while under care.
Webster technique and Breech presentation
Webster technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster to address the pelvic and sacral distortion leading to intra-uteral constraint. The technique is defined by the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) as, “A specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and/or sacroiliac joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.” - International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
When the sacrum moves out of proper alignment, there is tension on the utero-sacral ligament which creates a pulling type tension on the uterus. This tension can limit the ability of the baby to move freely leading to a breech presentation. Dr. Kristin and Dr. Ryan are both certified by the ICPA to practice Webster technique and address a potential root cause for breech presentations. The adjustment is extremely gentle and at no point deals with manipulating the baby's position.
